REUNION 2017

Celebrating the lives of George and Jeanetta Menzies

On the 25th March 2017, about 25 descendants of George and Jeanetta Menzies nee Smith and their 7 surviving children, met in Stockton, near where the family lived from about 1884 to 1915.

Many people met for the first time, others were renewing lost friendships and reliving memories. We heard presentations and viewed photos from the Carsons, the Aubreys and the Brews, Warners and Menzies.   Excitingly  Geoff Brew gave us a rollicking ride through wars in India and NZ, lawlessnes of the Bathurst goldfields, suggestions of manslaughter, and destitution in Sydney as part of the unfolding story on Charles and Jane Smith, Jeanetta's parents.

John Brew also launched his brand new book, Janes Legacy giving the true stories of more than 50 members of our family.

We also had the opportunity to to visit Woodley Cottage, the home where Jeanetta and George and their children lived and to walk around the foreshore where they would have come everyday to catch the ferry to Newcastle for school or work and looking across to where Pilots Row was, where all the sea captains, Brew, Warner and Carson would have lived and worked.

And we also visited the grave where George and Jeanetta and several of their children are buried. This sadly is in a very bad state of repair and we discussed options to stablise or fix the grave to avoid the councils requirement that it be made safe, in other words, pushed over.
